I sometimes use a retractable leash but never let it run out to the end. Mine is 25 feet, I let out about 20 feet, and that all depends on were we are. I have been using them for eons.

I had an incident just 2 days ago by my house with some woman using one. Some how the dog was running all over my lawn, this women had a stroller with a baby in it and a 4 / 5 yo kid with her. She leaves the kids in the road, I see her running up my driveway trying to catch her little dog with the entire retractable in her hands. Thank GOD for her that she got her dog, behind my house is the woods, no way would she leave her children in the road to chase her dog through the woods.

Using retractable leash needs your full attention with no distractions. I prefer my 6 foot leash for better control but I always take the retractable along.
