Here is the FDA warning about pentobarbital in Evanger's dog food:
https://www.fda.gov/animalveterinary.../ucm542265.htm . The details are rather yucky, and apparently some dogs did get sick from eating it. Evidently, their beef was poorly sourced from non-USDA facilities. Here is what it said about the beef: "Testing by USDA-FSIS of Evanger’s Hunk of Beef confirmed that the meat used in the product was bovine (beef). Trace amounts of pork and equine were also found, but both were less than 2% and therefore considered by FSIS as ‘not reportable.’" Only small amounts of horse meat. So the pentobarbital must have come from euthanized cows. Of course, Evanger's blames the FDA for pentobarbital being in their meat source, but Evanger's has a basic misunderstanding of the meat inspection process, and the buck ultimately stops with them. They knew their meat source was not "human grade." More details in a fairly balanced article here:
