I just did a little more digging. SmartSticks are made by the same people who make SmartBones, so I believe the same information I quoted above applies. For what it's worth, according to the package displayed on chewy.com, SmartSticks are sterilized by irradiation, which, although it sounds horrible, is actually a good thing.
