Default Rescue Yorkie

Hi everyone,

I am new here. We have just adopted a 6 year old male Yorkie from a rescue centre. We were told he can be cross but with training should stop if tackled early.
We have had him for 3 days and he is very affectionate towards both my husband and I. Occasionally he gets over excited and mistakes my husband shoes for a toy and growls at his feet. I have given a sharp 'no' and he stopped.
He is showing signs of being territorial, barking at the window. Again a sharp no stops him.
Today a male friend came to visit and Geoff, my Yorkie was sitting on my knee in the garden. My friend reached to touch him, which was a stupid thing to do and he barked and growled at him. Not sure if he was protecting me or he was afraid of a stranger.
I have had dogs before mostly Cairns who have shown aggressive behaviour.
I want to stop the bad behaviour before he gets into bad habits.
All advice welcome
