*Technically*, they are correct. If the surgeon is Board Certified, then they are called "Board Certified Veterinary Surgeons." (See What is a Board-Certified Small Animal Internal Medicine Specialist?) You should definitely ask to make sure that the surgeons are Board Certified. Beyond that, Board Certified Surgeons often informally specialize in a particular kind of surgery, so it's unusual for them to tell you that they don't classify their surgeons by specialty. I would ask to speak with a board certified surgeon with plenty of experience performing orthopedic surgery...
