I'm no expert, but my :02:

I started my first Yorkie off without a life jacket and allowed him to swim in a friend's pool. He did fine and there were no close calls. But since then, he hasn't loved swimming.

My second Yorkie started out with a life vest at a K9 Aquatics swimming center in town, and she seems to love it time after time. I'm sure there are Yorkies who love swimming without a vest, but I figure why not? They're not terribly expensive or difficult to put on. It gives them a little extra support and makes the experience a little less traumatic.

I figure it's like coats and booties in the winter. They don't absolutely have to have them when it's 20 degrees out to avoid frostbite, but they want to stay out longer when they're comfortable.

It's safer, they're more comfortable. Why not?
