We have wood floors and with Callie's knee issues I can't afforded for her to be slipping around on the floors and hurt herself. Joey gets mats between his paw pads which seem to bother him and usually the cause is one little piece of grass that some how got up in there and and then hair wrapped around it. So I pretty much have to trim theirs.
