Yes, certainly it is a no go for insurance if an older dog and pre existings.
I adopted my dog at one year old and thought he would break his legs etc as he was a jumper. So I got insurance at a good rate then. After about six months he got juvenile cataracts and had to have surgery. That was very costly so I was glad to have insurance. The surgery and recovery were very tedious and my poor dog had to go through many weeks of the hard cone and painful eye drops etc. I don't think I would put an older dog through all this having seen what it entailed.
He has luckily been free of limb breaks or knees issues and apart from a minor case of pancreatitis has been pretty well. However the costs that insurance did not cover have been high. As he is eight now, I pray he will continue well.
