Beautifully said and exactly my thoughts. You did the right thing for your beloved in your circumstances, you stopped her suffering as quickly as you could. She'd have had to live on heavy pain medication, sedation while chauffeured around, perhaps from clinic to clinic, exam table to exam table, lab studies and imaging studies, quite a bit of poking, prodding, painful examinations while she wondered what had happened to her and why you weren't stopping her misery. Often in critical situations, there is so much waiting and wondering by the little dog, perhaps multiple consults and still you might not have found out that the problem was fixable, or that the fixing was be unbearably painful or you could bear the expense of them trying to correct whatever the medical problem was or how much suffering, harsh medications and uncertainty your baby would have to endure during surgery prep and post-surgical critical care and rehabilitation.

I'm so very sorry for your loss and know you have a long, miserable road ahead as you try to come to grips with this sudden onset of total catastrophe. Love and hugs to you and your partner.
