This is based on challenge studies, which means that vaccinated dogs were exposed to the virus to determine whether or not they were still immune to the diseases. The minimum duration of immunity for rabies vaccine is 3 years. This assumes that the dogs were properly vaccinated at the right time. Sometimes puppies are vaccinated too early for the vaccinations to be effective. This is why many experts say that dogs should receive their core vaccines AT LEAST until 7 years of age.
