I tried everything -- Thundershirts, calming treats, Rescue Remedy, calming sprays, etc etc... nothing helped.

We spoke in length to vet about anxiety and she was comfortable prescribing Trazadone (which is not a sedative) but it allows him to have less anxiety. It really works well for us. We tried xanax prior and it did not really do anything. Our vet said she sees better results with Trazadone. It doesn't make him zombie-like or sedate, it just takes the edge off. He still gets nervous during loud thunder but he no longer pants heavily, paces all over the place, shakes, etc. Now he usually finds a place to go lay like under the bed or in the bathroom and is less anxious. Oh I also keep the TV loud either with something I am watching or classical music.
