I would try putting a tight shirt on him or, buy the Thundershirt itself if you want - that can comfort them a great deal when scared like this. You may also want to try giving 3mg Melatonin (not timed release) for this kind of fear, which is what they give for thunderstorms. Can also try calming sprays and/or Rescue Remedy etc.

Also try to distract him from his feelings in the car - bring favorite toys and chews, and play a little - so that he gets used to not feeling fear in the car again.
