I have both the wooden fold up steps (like a step ladder with cushions - 17 3/4 inches high) and the 4 step (16 inches high) plastic covered sheepskin one - the three step model is only 12 inches high. I like the folding one because it is easy to take on trips without taking it apart (only for up to 25 pounds), but I think a new puppy feels safer on the covered one (up to 70 pounds). It took all of 2 seconds for my dog to learn to use it and I love it.
