We've had our fur baby (our first!) home for just a week and a half. We did the "cry it out." It was hard the first few nights, then he slept (or was at least quiet) for the entire night starting Night 3. We have a crate with an open door inside a larger pen, so he can get out in the middle of the night and relieve himself on the puppy pads (which he does!!!!) The crate has his soft bed, a baby receiving blanket that I slept with for a week before he came home, and a small stuffed toy. We got him at 13 weeks.

Before he goes to bed, we have a half hour of "cuddle time" in a dimly-lit room with his head against my heart so he can hear it beat, then we place him gently in his bed.

He learned "sit" almost immediately, so he is not allowed to get out of his pen in the AM until he's sitting pretty and quietly. This helps him learn how to self-soothe.

There are no "perfect" solutions: we all just try and do the best we can, with a lot of love....
