If something like this happens again, I honestly would *not* hesitate to give Benadryl asap.

Here in AZ, we have scorpions, fire ants, spiders etc -- all of which can sting our kiddos. Benadryl is an extremely benign thing to give and yet, it can literally save a life when/if it comes to the histamine response that can happen w/ stings.

I always keep BOTH the pill form of Benadryl and the liquid form (in case you have to force it!) on hand in my doggie ER kit.

You give 1-2mg/pound. For stings, I absolutely give the 2mg/pound.
