What is his clinical/factual reasoning behind suggesting you can't give Nutrical...?? Nutrical is just a multi-vitamin with some sugar and fat thrown in. There is really nothing wrong at all with giving it. Unless there is something else the vet is thinking of here...?

So then, if vet doesn't want you giving Nutrical - how did the vet suggest you keep blood glucose reasonable then?

To me, it sounds as if this vet is very unfamiliar in treating this condition. I'd see an Internist asap.
