Some dogs absolutely understand some words - and develop quite an "understanding vocabulary."

My daughter's dog understands "Lake" and "Ride" .... to the point that they started spelling these words and now he can spell them too.

My little mixed breed certainly understood some words. I could have any person in the world come into my house and face any direction and in any tone say, "I think I see a dog," and she would run to the door, look out the window, start barking, and frantically look around for the dog. They could even word it differently and say, "I believe there is a dog out there." It was the words she understood - nothing else. And, she understood many other words too.

Then - I've had other dogs that aren't nearly so clever that way. They always needed more clues.
