I don't give flea/tick year-round so I try to 'lessen' the chemical use if I can. I also space it out 45 days usually. Most of these medications can technically last that long but most say to do every 30 days to make it easier on people to get on a schedule and not forget to give it.
I've been using Nexgard (an oral chew prevents ticks and fleas) and recently Simparica -- similar drug. I typically only give it March through September/October here in MD. We've had a pretty warm winter here though so I did give it this year in Feb.
Heartworm meds are given year round though, just to be safe. I use Heartguard.
I agree that natural can sometimes be just as dangerous. IMO it just depends on the risk of fleas/ticks where you are located. If I lived in a colder climate, I probably would hardly give it at all. I do use Vetriscience flea/tick spray if I know I am going to an area heavy with ticks and want extra protection against the nasty critters. |
