I agree with Taylor that "natural" doesn't always mean safe. Arsenic is a natural occurring substance, but obviously is poisonous.
My problem with diatomaceous earth, even the food grade, is that it is silica. How safe is it for our dogs' lungs and mucous membranes? I don't know.
Essential oils -- I've read a lot anecdotal evidence of negative and deadly side effects in dogs. It's very easy to get the combinations or dosages wrong. Tea tree oil is an example. Some sources say to never use it on a pet, but there are many products on the market for pets that contain it.
I'm not happy about putting chemical pest preventatives on my dogs either. Teddy reacts badly to the ones we have tried, but he is also highly allergic to flea bites. I understand your dilemma. It's something I wrestle with every summer. I'm still searching for a good solution for him.
