I enjoy the positive teaching methods in "The Loved Dog" by Tamar Geller and am serial reading a couple dog books now, "Decoding Your Dog" and "The Dog Who Loved Too Much", both of which I'm loving. 'Decoding' is a maybe a little agenda driven. All three place heavy emphasis on first learning about canine nature and why/how behavior issues develop and how they learn/heal best, through positive reinforcement of wanted behavior.
Learning how to motivate your dog to do what you want will be your biggest challenge and the keeping yourself motivated to motivate your dog will be your second biggest and when all else fails, fake your happy motivation but always keep your dog WANTING to win for you by doing what you teach him with happy praise and a lovely bit of kibble. Later your dog will want to please you above all else for that lovely feeling of something worked for and achieved.
