My fur kid Kinder is going to be seven years in April. When she was young she jumped off the couch and sprained her back. I put lots of big pillows in front of the couch along with puppy stairs. That has helped and it looks like junk in the living room but we love our baby. Our bed is way too high and she did not want to use the puppy stairs so I put a night time collar and lease on her. I wrap the lease around my wrist and she sleeps above me on her pillow. If she has to go potty she scratches my husband's head. My last little girl was losing her use of her back legs and I did this and it is safe and they cannot fall off the bed. When we leave we put her in the kitchen I do not want her to fall off the arm of the couch. Kinder is a really good girl and she knows we are protecting her. Hope this helps. Also in our motorhome I keep stuff on the couch I do not want her jumping on the couch and chairs. Susan
