My Riley will do both. But prefers the pads. And I agree they are kind of a pain in the butt. But when you have to be gone a little longer they are nice. I would take him out often you probably kinda know when he is thinking about it. Say go potty. And when it happens lots of praise and a treat... You would be surprised if they associate go potty with a treat he will catch on fast. Good luck
