I would base my decision on whether they're a responsible breeder on other factors than what they're charging. I found a a few breeders on the AKC site and interviewed them. I asked about their breeding practices (health testing, how old their adults were when they started breeding, how many litters a female was having a year, how many breeding dogs they had, if they were showing), I asked about health of their dogs, how they were kept, how old puppies were when they were released... and probably a ton of other things as they came up. I wanted someone who could easily answer those questions and who also had some good questions for me. That showed me they were just as interested in placing one of their dogs with a good home as making money. I still talk to the breeder of my girls on a regular basis.
That being said, based on my search, I think the $2k range is reasonable. Best of luck on your search!!!
