It is a scary disease, but if it can be controlled they can do very well. Cookie has had five great years! She was off of prednisone for a long time. I doubt she will ever be off of it again....I am ok with that and thankful that she is controlled for now. I follow my vet's advice and don't play with the prednisone...I don't love it, but it has saved her life. I was upset about it at first, but quickly saw that, once controlled, we can back it down to every other day so her adrenals still work. Sometimes a heavier dose is a necessary evil. She is happy and that is really what matters most to me!

Be careful with oils....you really need a very low fat diet. If you want to home cook I strongly urge you to do a consult with a vet nutritionist. The one who originally formulated Cookie's diet now works for Royal Canin so I use another through the specialist that I use. You can find a vet nutritionist at: American College of Veterinary Nutrition | ACVN Usually they work with your vet. Cookie has never tired of her diet, thankfully. The only time I had a problem with her was when she was not feeling well....and that is always a sign with her that something is amiss.

A vet nutritionist with awesome credentials has a website you might be interested in: www.petdiets.com You could also do a consult with her if you wanted to....of course it would be through your vet. The problem is that they are often in another state and cannot speak with you directly because of veterinary licensure.
