I haven't read anything about a white patch being connected to cotton vs silk. Many of my friends' pups are like Canana's above and had white chest patches and grew up to have silky coats.

My Teddy had rather atypical coloring during the maturation process. Started with traditional coloring. Then, almost white blond topknot and lots of extra blond around his legs. He has a silky coat, although his hair is thinner and not quite as nice as Max's overall.

I generally agree with Canana that you would have to look at the grandparents along with the parents, ideally. But, my boys are full brothers from different litters and they have differences.
