I always take my dogs for walks in the neighborhood. The collies walk the whole way, but my Hokies get too tired so I carry them home. I do this so the dogs will get exercise but additionally so they are familiar with the area and can return if they should wander. It also familiarize the neighbors with my dogs just in case.
My dogs have a fenced in acre, but the walks to me are important.
Again make calls, put up posters and in our area, we have several dogs who are trained to search. They have often been successful.

My big boy slipped out one day and my next door neighbour called him home, he was happily going through the walkway to I think the park we often visit....
My Yorkie took off one day and I am running to catch up with him another neighbor other end of the street called him over and held him until I got there.
So good neighbours are just great.
