This is a tough one! When they're crusted I use a warm wash clothe. I'll dab until the area around their eyes are wet enough that's the "gunk" is soft. I then wipe it away as best as I can then use a little metal comb around their eyes for anything that remains. Then pat the area dry a bit. For me I've found the most important thing is to keep the eyes dry but not let the gunk dry... so, I'm wiping out the gunk constantly it seems (3+) times a day with something dry and using a wet clothe anytime it's dried up so I'm not pulling out hair.
