Default Eye goobers

My Olie has terrible eye goobers. (I don't know what else to call them! LOL). I don't bathe him everyday because his skin is naturally dry and it makes it unbearable for him. I've tried washing his face and using eye wipes but he loses the hair under his eyes too much when I do that. The Vet said there is really nothing he can do. Grrrr. Any ideas? They get pretty matted. When I bathe him, I use a tear free shampoo and they do soften up and come off. I've tried using a tooth brush with water but unless it's really wet and I'm bathing him, they pull his hair out. I may just have to put up with them but they look nasty. I don't see it in other dogs when I've seen them in person or pictures. Anyone else have this issue?
