Regardless, you really need to take your dog to the vet. Anal glands can rupture if impacted or infected. It's very painful for your dog and will end up costing you more heartache and money. Can also cause lifelong problems with pooping and may even require surgery if allowed to get to that point.

Avoid bigger problems. Just see the vet.

Most dogs empty their glands naturally. Some need them expressed manually. Do not attempt to do this on your own at this point. You can cause them to rupture.

Sometimes a change in diet can cause the glands to get impacted when the dog naturally expressed them before.

The smaller the dog, the more attentive you have to be to the rear end. Check regularly/daily to make things stay clean back there. Sometimes small dogs get things stuck and that contributes to problems.
