It's definitely a good idea using a harness. Like all small dogs, Yorkies are at risk for collapsing trachea, and a collar can aggravate this.

I use a step in harness for my little girl. It goes nowhere near the trachea. The one I use is a Buddy Belt, and it's very easy to get it off and on. My little girl isn't bothered by it, but I think it's best not to leave it on all of the time.
