If more people understood this, accepted this, and appreciated its origin...we would be in such a better place to get more animals into their furever homes.
Human beings experience allll sorts of things and are a result of their experiences throughout life. It is the same for these little sentient beings we call dogs.
These kiddos who are given up need compassion, support, patience, time, love, affection, reassurance, consistency, comfort....just like we would if we were suddenly on our own, but didn't know why. Not to mention if we were suddenly on our own - caged / kenneled in a noisy, heavily populated, stressful, turned up environment.
Shelter/rescue doggies are amazingly resilient and special. Lots of potential baggage, sure, but totally worth it. |
Great post, Ann. My two little rescues are such a joy. They are so different from my other pups. They are NOT picky eaters. The are grateful for everything they are given. They are so smart, I can't believe it. They see everything. If you take something from them, they will watch exactly where you put it and get it back by whatever means necessary. Lol. My husband said Tina was actually watching a jet fly overhead one day. I have never seen a dog do that before.
They are resourceful and clever. They delight me with something new every day. They already knew how to use potty pads when I got them. They prefer to go outside and they are persistent in letting me know they want out. They are great communicators, believe it or not. They never give up, they just keep on going.
My pups are in the process of learning to be loved and they are really appreciative of everything you do for them. You should see Toby learning to walk on a leash at the park! He loves exploring and has just started approaching human's for a pet and a kind word. Tina seems to be experiencing sensory overload at the park. She prefers to be held close and cuddled until she sees it's ok. She will let me know when she wants down.
We were told that our babies were neglected and not phycally harmed by humans. But I can see that we have had to earn their trust. We take that very seriously and I consulted an expert for info on how I should go about socializing them. She said it could be a very slow process. Toby seems to want to meet other doggies, although he is cautious at first. Tina is still afraid.
Yes, they came with baggage but watching them come out of their little shells and trust us and experience the big world out there is so rewarding. I'm so happy that we found these little angels. It feels like they were out there just waiting for us to come find them.
