I'm reluctant to use kibble though for long -- I could be wrong but my experience with it is that it encourages "grazing" -- just leaving a dish with the pup eating when he wishes. When my 2-year-old was a baby we found we had a hard time judging how much he was eating and didn't realize he was getting sick. And I know now that he's full-size that he'd gobble up any food that puppy left.

No you can get them to just eat dry food at certain times. You can also soak the dry food in hot water then drain it to make it mushy.
