So you say he does the poop trail ? Poop, step,Poop,step. I know exactly what you are talking about with this & this can be a sign of a spine, pelvis or knee issue & could be why he doesn't use the pads. I would be looking into a vet visit to get the things I mentioned checked out as he could be in discomfort.
