Go for it! We brought Teddy home at 8 months old from our breeder and changed his name. He was originally Tank, but loved his new name instantly.
Sometimes dogs will respond better to one name over another. Two syllables names are usually advised, although Max loves his one syllable.
Say the name a lot, and say it lovingly, and your doggy should respond.
