I'm glad you discovered the possible key! My Max did not like grass his first year. He is pad trained and when we would go walking, he would do his business on the pavement. Might be the grass tickling the rear end when they are small.

Is your Max possibly a 'shy' pooper? Teddy was that way. He wanted privacy.

Make sure you praise profusely and reward when he gets it right. My boys are 7 years old and we still praise and reward.
