Banana peel whole; causing obstruction? Has anyone dealt with their little one eating a banana peel? My 13yo guy--who has a lot of gastro issues to begin with--swallowed 1/3 of an average-sized banana peel without chewing. If you imagine peeling a banana into three equal long pieces, he swallowed one of those three pieces.
This happened on Monday (6 days ago). I've been out of town until yesterday and I'm just now learning that he hasn't had a normal bowel movement since the incident (all tiny pieces). Last night, he had major diarrhea, which was mixed with dark blood.
I see a lot of conflicting information online. The consensus seems to be that peels can be digested and are not toxic, but many say they can cause blockages. I don't think he has a full obstruction (otherwise he would be bloated and have a hard stomach), but I think it may be stuck lengthwise in his small or large intestine, causing a partial blockage and upsetting his stomach.
Other than the diarrhea, he is acting normal. Drinking water, full appetite, playful (considering his age), etc. Any thoughts or similar experiences? I plan on taking him to his vet tomorrow for xrays. |
