I would recommend you first see an orthopedic physician that specializes in non-surgical treatments. Too often, back pain is made worse by surgery - don't get me wrong, surgery is sometimes the only solution - but sometimes it is not and can make the problem worse. If you see a doc who specializes in surgery - well, then they are most likely to recommend it first before trying other things. If you don't get relief from a doc who does not specialize in surgery - then you can always go the surgery route later. I've seen tooooo many failed back surgeries.

My husband had wonderful results for a bad lower back and a bad shoulder with non-surgical treatments - not chiropractic - but an MD who used physical therapy and other treatments.

Just my two cents worth.
