I think the first thing you should know is that a reputable breeder does not sell their puppies to be used as Christmas presents. It's a crazy hectic time of year, and the little ones are more at risk of being forgotten, abandoned later when the novelty wears off, or hurt in all the hustle and bustle if the season.

You can give a gift of doggy goods (bowls, blankets, toys, etc) with a note that says "When you're ready, I'll help you bring a little one home." That way, the recipient (whether individual or family) can prepare themselves for the new family member.
