The risk for pyomentra goes up with every heat and the older they get. I have heard of older dogs getting it and being rushed to the vet for surgery and getting the emergency spay but it still killing them within a month. It happened to my aunts dog and I have heard it before. For female dogs it is just not safe to leave them intact unless they are breeding.
