I really believe that all puppies should be combed and brushed daily even if they do not appear to need it. The daily combing and brushing when they are young prepares them for the necessary grooming they will need as adults, especially puppies that will have long hair as an adult. Even if you intend to keep your baby's hair short as an adult daily combing and brushing will be necessary to cut down on shedding and to keep the dog accustomed to being groomed. Early training can save you and your pup from having upsetting grooming experiences later on.
It's up to you to decide if you want him to have long or short hair. Yorkies and Maltese both have long coats that need attending to. Shorter hair may cut down on grooming time but trimming will be necessary often. Having a good all natural shampoo and conditioner plus a spray conditioner will help keep the coat silky and easier to comb out. With a sulfate free natural shampoo you can bathe your dog as often as you need to without drying out the skin and coat and the natural ingredients actually help condition them.
I have stainless steel 5" round tip scissors for trimming around the face and feet and 7" scissors for the body. I just do touch ups between groomer visits. Some people buy their own electric trimmers and do all their own grooming. You might want to watch some grooming videos to get ideas. I don't endorse many of the grooming videos on YouTube though. Some are pretty bad. YT used to have some videos that were good in the grooming thread but I don't know if they are still there.
Good luck. There are multiple ways to style a Morkie coat. You can find pictures with an online search. |
