I have read around the world many people don't see dogs as family member like a lot of Americans. I see rehoming as a last resort and not taken lightly. I don't believe in shaming others for that decision because I don't want the dog to get abused for being in the wrong home.

I firmly believe parents should pick the breed and pet. Kids will love any dog a parent brings home. The dog most of the time will become the parents' responsibility. It is just the way it is with children.

The just a dog phrase does not offend me. Yes, I agree some use it to downplay the importance of a dog's life. However, I remind myself it's a dog when making financial decisions. I will do my best for the animal, but the humans in my life will not suffer for the pet. I place humans above animals life. I know some animals lovers don't, but I find that extreme thinking. JMO, everybody just do what's right for you.
I have to agree if there is NO LOVE for the dog and harm / abuse can happen , it is in the best interest of the dog to be re-homed as much as I HATE seeing a dog that has bonded and loves it's family be tossed from their life because "it's just a dog", that phrase does bother me, it has been said TO ME more times then I care to remember. I make a life commitment to all the dogs I have had, as far as putting a pet before a human in a medical issue, I don't think there is a yorkie lover that would choose to let a human in their family DIE to save their yorkies life. If I could not afford medical bills for my family AND for my furbaby, I would not have a dog. ALL my now passed babies have always had the best of the best as far as medical goes, I never had to choose human over dog and anyone that would have to one day make that choice should never own a dog. My dogs are my family, and get treated as such, they are not and will never be "just a dog" in my life. Yes, Americans do tend to spoil their dogs and YES treat them as family because THEY ARE. BOTTOM LINE, if you cannot afford to medically take care of a sick dog AND a sick family member then DO NOT GET A DOG.
