Yorkies were breed a lot bigger way back in the day. They are hunters and needed size to capture their pray. As time went on the Royal people of England wanted more of a fu fu dog, lap dog. So as breeding went on they would breed the runts of each litter. Didn't take too long to decrease their size.
I saw a picture of my breeders great grandfather with 2 Yorkies that weighed 20lbs. They were gorgeous!
Also, the larger Yorkies back then seemed to be a lot healthier.
