Actually Carol, you are right there are cotton coats and wooly coats also. In fact there are wire coats also. The soft coat term came up many years ago as we started seeing a slight improvement over the more cottony and wooly coats. It's still very improper since it is soft, but it's not quite as difficult to take care of as a total cotton or wool. As for the wire, it tends to be very sparse and breaks easy.
