I know that sounds so scary! My Cali is not a runner, but because of the hawk situation in our area the rule is that she is NEVER allowed tomgomout any door with out me going out first and then inviting her.
Of course this training started with obedience school, but then when it was time for her to to go out I would put the harness and leash on her and make her sit and stay until I told her she could come. Started by putting the leash around a chair leg to hold her back and giving her treats when she waited and such.
I really kind of see it as a good safety thing.
