It is also quite possible those mastiffs were protecting their child when they went after that wee dog. Remember strange home strange backyard their child opened the door to let them in.
Mastiffs are not known for aggression. But they are known for their protectiveness.
When I have children over if I bring out one of our big dogs, they are on lead the child is seated and we have gone through the rules of engagement.
