Lot's of coyotes around here (Colorado). I've found that they don't like humans all that much, and you can often keep them at bay with your foot. What the Dept. of Wildlife here tells me is loud noises will scare them off, usually. I know people who carry air horns and whistles and cow bells. Since I have a gun and a carry license I carry a small revolver with blanks in it. Haven't used it yet, but if one gets too close I'll let you know how it works.
Around here it's legal to shoot all the coyotes you want and there is no dedicated hunting season. I don't want to kill anything, therefore the blanks, but the ranchers around here see them as predators, and the law treats them as rats. Me, I think they are beautiful, noble animal (at least the healthy ones), but I'm not about to feed my dog to them. |
