YT member Doodlebug, Jean, recently rescued an adorable pair of siblings believed to be Yorkie/Maltese. The boy is mostly black and the girl is white.

I can't figure out the genetics since Maltese are white, not black. I've met Morkies, and they were white. Where would they get the gene(s) for black fur/hair?

Can someone clue me in?
I would guess all of the colors other than white come from the Yorkie genes. How that gets translated to mostly black, is beyond my understanding of coat color genetics. My eyes start to glaze over when I read about genes, alleles, phenotypes, and so on.
