Cry Protein loss Condition

I'm new to this forum, but I share in the love for my dog. I've had Bella since she was 6 wks old. She is 5 and recently became sick with fluid in abdomen and chest. Local vet considered possible heart condition, but heard no murmur. He sent us home with Antibiotics and Lasiks to use daily. She did ok for a few days and then we noticed labored breathing again. The vet has sent us to a specialist that is running test and I was phoned today about a possible issue with Bella where she loses protein. The Dr. said they could do exploratory surgery (which wont change the prognoses just give as a definitive diagnosis. I would gladly do this if this would be the cure, but that's not what the Dr. indicated. I told the Dr. we would like to treat symptomatically and see how she responds. He said she would have to be on a high protein diet and I think steroids and monitor her progress once released from the hospital. Can anyone please help me that has gone through this? I'm a responsible pet owner, but I don't have thousands of dollars for exploratory surgery that wont cure my baby girl. Bella is my family and I want her to be happy and have a good life. I love her so very, very much. Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated. Thank You
