Can anyone help with questions on Pancreatitis? Our little Sammie came home on Thursday after being in the ICU four nights for severe Pancreatitis. At the hospital he had IV fluids, meds and a feeding tube...He is so much better now (does not seem to be in any pain) but we are very worried about the future.
Last weekend he had severe vomiting, was constantly standing in a 'hunched' position, crying out whenever we touched his abdomen, had diarrhea and would not eat or drink. We took him to the ER and he was transferred to a specialty hospital the next day.
A little background: He is about 11 years old (he was a rescue so we're not certain about his age), has stage 3 Collapsing Trachea and developed Cushing's from the daily Prednisone we had to give him to keep the inflammation in his trachea under control. We think the Cushing's (and perhaps his Hypothyroidism) contributed to - or directly caused - the Pancreatitis. His liver enzymes were also elevated - an ALP of 2500 but down to 1600 now. (A 'SNAP cpl' test - which tests the severity of the Pancreatitis - was so high that it didn't register...Over 2000, when normal is under 200.)
Our Internal Medicine vet has him on two antibiotics, an anti-nausea medication and Tramadol for pain. We are giving him Royal Cain low-fat wet food with some boiled chicken breast mixed in. Small, frequent meals and no snacks at all.
I've read so many articles and threads on Pancreatitis but wondered if anyone could give some personal advice on how to avoid possible future attacks. Has anyone here overcome severe pancreatitis and had their little one go on to live a normal, healthy life?
Thanks so much. |
