I always use plain white vinegar as 'fabric softener' even in my own laundry. It's a chemical reaction where the acid (vinegar) neutralizes the base (detergent) and ensures all the soap is removed from the fabric, so it's 'softer'. Vinegar is also great for removing odours and killing bacteria!
